Psychodynamic is a theoretical perspective that is a part of psychoanalysis. As with
psychoanalysis the subconscious is very important. The past and defenses are important as well
but one idea that makes psychodynamic different is its idea of object relations. To put object
relations simply it’s the inner voices, thoughts and feelings experienced as a result of
relationships, events, etc. Everyone has them and they often are the core of problems and cause
much disruption in lives. While I use CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) techniques,
psychodynamic is used once the therapeutic relationship is built to help the root of problems
identified. Studies have been conducted proving psychodynamic’s long term changes. It is an
evidenced based practice that I have found to be effective personally and professionally.
